Data Centre Asset Criticality

Assess asset consequence and support proportionate maintenance and lifecycle decisions.

Scope note

This article provides general operational guidance. Apply site-specific engineering review, risk controls, manufacturer requirements and applicable regulations before use.

Define the decision the data supports

Asset information should serve operating decisions: what needs attention, what risk is changing and where investment is required. Begin with those decisions before expanding the data set.

Build a usable information model

Use stable asset identifiers and a hierarchy that reflects how systems are operated. Separate relatively static attributes from condition, maintenance and risk records that change over time.

  • Unique identifier and functional location
  • System, parent and dependency relationships
  • Criticality and service consequence
  • Condition, known defects and lifecycle status
  • Document, maintenance and spares references

Practical example

Two identical chilled water pumps can carry different criticality ratings if one serves a single data hall with no alternative path. Criticality follows the service consequence of failure, not the equipment type.

Keep the register controlled

Ownership, change triggers and validation routines matter more than collecting every possible field. Updates should be part of equipment changes, project handover and maintenance close-out.

  • Assign accountable data owners
  • Define mandatory fields and accepted values
  • Record source and last verification date
  • Audit high-criticality records first

Key takeaways

  • 01Criticality follows service consequence, not equipment type.
  • 02Apply one consistent scale across the site.
  • 03Re-assess when configuration or load changes.

Frequently asked questions

What is asset criticality?
A structured rating of the consequence of an asset's failure on service, safety, compliance and cost, used to prioritise maintenance, spares and investment.
How much data should an asset register hold?
Enough to support maintenance, risk and replacement decisions. Fields that nobody maintains reduce trust in the whole register.
